Eco Spotlight: Made in Greenock

Climate-conscious practices are already at the core of many organisations and businesses within Inverclyde; ICAN wants to highlight these in hopes that we can support others to adopt similar practices in their projects.

Our first Eco Spotlight is Made in Greenock, a small business founded by Teruko Tissera in 2021.

Made in Greenock sells a range of hand-crafted, colourful jewellery and bags inspired by Teruko’s homeland of Sri Lanka. The unique products are made from recycled materials, including broken jewellery and scrap fabric. Even the packaging for the products is recycled.

Teruko’s passion for upcycling was nurtured during lockdown, in which she joined a fashion group delivered by Rig Arts over Zoom. While isolating, this was a great way to connect people who were also at risk in the pandemic. In 2021, she joined the self-reliant group at Belville Community Garden, and this is where Made in Greenock was born.

The same year, Teruko took part in the COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference. On this experience, Teruko said, “This event opened my eyes into new ways of upcycling and ingrained the responsibility we have as humans.

“We can not change the world, but we can change our corner.”

Made in Greenock has relaunched its line of products after a hiatus, just in time for Christmas gifting. See more photos of the pieces on their Facebook and Instagram.
